"The 355" Leaves a LOT to Be Desired

by John Zenoni

Before I even get too far into this, let me begin by saying that the reviews are atrocious for the latest all-female, action-hero, spy thriller, ‘The 355.’ I'm going to admit that I can definitely see some bad in the film, ok, a lot actually, but I don't find myself loathing it as many people do, including my fellow movie attendee, lol! There were many questionable scenes, over-the-top moments of unreality and ridiculous stunts that could never happen. As for the story itself, about CIA agent, Mason "Mace" Brown, played by Jessica Chastain, who tries to track down a top-secret weapon that could be used to dominate the world if fallen into the wrong hands, it also has some confusing plot lines. Also in this film are German agent Marie (Diane Kruger), former MI6 ally and cutting-edge computer specialist Khadijah (Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong'o), and skilled Colombian psychologist Graciela (Oscar® winner Penélope Cruz), who are all being tracked by Fan Bingbing (Lin Mi Sheng).
While leaving a lot to be desired, there are also some pretty fun action-packed moments, especially toward the last third of the film. Overall, I have to say this is an entertaining popcorn flick. At least I enjoyed it better than the latest James Bond film. I would love to see these ladies reunited (and their is a potential for it the way the film ends), but reading the box office numbers so far, I don’t see it happening. This is a cast that worked well together and is what added to my appeal to the film.
Oh, the reference to what 355 means doesn't come to light until almost the end, which is the secret code name for the first female spy during the American Revolution. And her name still remains a mystery to this day.
