Robots, mummies, fast cars, sharks and Tupac. The summer movie season is almost here.

The Mummy
This has NOTHING to do with those movies starring Brendan Fraser and The Rock. I repeat: NOTHING.
The Mummy marks Tom Cruise's return to supernatural cinema. If it's anything like his first monster movie, Interview with the Vampire, I think we may have a winner. But there is a red flag: The Mummy is the follow-up to Dracula Untold in Universal Pictures' attempt to create a cinematic universe -- the monster version of the Avengers movies. On the plus side, both Cruise and co-star Russell Crowe tend to be pretty discerning when choosing film projects (Most of the time, anyway. I haven't forgotten M:I-2).

Cars 3
All Eyez On Me
This could go either way. There's a ton of pressure for the filmmakers to get this right and a hundred ways that it could go wrong. Tupac's first biopic is gonna be under way more scrutiny than 2015's Straight Outta Compton. But releasing the movie on Pac's birthday is a great idea.

Why all the negative reviews for Tom Cruise's latest flick 'The Mummy?' I have no idea because I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a summertime, action-filled, popcorn flick people! Is it Tom's best film? Not even close by a mile. But is it so bad to be deserving of the scathing reviews I have seen from film critics? I think not. Yes, there are some pretty predictable moments but the storyline works as well as the chemistry between all the actors in the film. The biggest selling point of course is the action (the airplane scene has to be seen to be believed - it is great!) and the special effects. A couple of things I really liked is that the film started off fast and it did not pretend to be anything other than a fun, old-fashioned 'monster' film. I truly hope that the negative reviews and lack of profits will not keep the planned 'monster' movie reboot from happening as it could be fun. The only other thing I will say is that I hope Tom Cruise will look into doing some more serious roles as well as he is also a very good dramatic actor. But in the meantime, I will say I have enjoyed his latest role as an action star.
ReplyDeleteIf you are looking for a great kid-friendly animated film, definitely check out 'Cars 3.' As with any Pixar made films, the animation is excellent and in fact, at one point I was wondering if a certain scene was real life, that is how good it is. The storyline is great - Lighting McQueen has some new competition and while anxious to keep racing and training to prove himself in the racing world, he begins to reflect on his beginnings as a race car, his previous mentor and what his future holds. Of course you could not have a 'Cars' movie without 'Mater' and some other regulars from the previous films. There was also an introduction of some other new characters as well, including a new racing friend/companion that will probably lead to future films. This was a good film that taught some life lessons while keeping you entertained. The kids in the theater with us came out saying 'Awesome' and 'Cool.' That is definitely a good sign for a movie made primarily for kids.
ReplyDeleteI saw the first half of "Transformers" and then walked out. It was awful.
ReplyDeleteWant to see a good, pretty scary summertime popcorn flick? Then you need to check out "47 Meters Down." This is actually a fairly good shark movie - granted, definitely not any serious competition to the classic granddaddy of them all, "Jaws" - with some decent scares. The acting is not bad and the premise is pretty believable. Two sisters embark on a fun-filled trip to the tropics to get away and end up meeting two gents who introduce them to shark diving in cages. Of the sisters, one is very adventurous and free-spirited while the other is more serious and conservative and does not want to do the dive. Needless to say the other sister talks her into it and they go on the excursion. Of course all does not go well as on their turn the wench that is holding the cage snaps and they go plummeting to the bottom of the sea - 47 meters down - and they have to wait to be rescued, all the while facing sharks in the water. It ends in a way I did not see coming so I was pleasantly surprised by that. A blockbuster? No, I don't see that happening but it is still a good flick for a few jumps and scares.
ReplyDeleteI decided to continue on my recent trend of seeing animated films and went to see the latest in the Despicable Me series, "Despicable Me 3." It was very much worth the trip to the theater to see it. In this latest entry, 'The mischievous Minions hope that Gru will return to a life of crime after the new boss of the Anti-Villain League fires him. Instead, Gru decides to remain retired and travel to Freedonia to meet his long-lost twin brother for the first time. The reunited siblings soon find themselves in an uneasy alliance to take down the elusive Balthazar Bratt, a former 1980s child star who seeks revenge against the world.' The laughs were plenty and the plot easy to follow. The most hysterical thing about the movie though, and most likely over most kids' heads, was the acting and dialogue of the enemy, Balthazar Bragg. This character really stole the movie in opinion as the character still 'lived' in the 80's and had spiked hair, wore jogging suits, played songs such as 'Bad' by Michael Jackson and 'Money for Nothing' (I Want My MTV) by Dire Straits. He moonwalked when he could. He even called for a dance fight or dance off on a couple of occasions. This was a great, fun movie for all ages.
ReplyDelete"My Cousin Rachel" is an excellent period piece that completely catches you off guard with its ending. I normally do not tend to favor these types of films but I gave it a try and I am so glad I did. The storyline is the following:
ReplyDelete"Philip is a young Englishman who finds his cousin Ambrose dead after traveling to Florence, Italy. He vows revenge against Ambrose's missing wife Rachel, blaming her for his untimely demise. When Philip meets Rachel for the first time, his mood suddenly changes as he finds himself falling for her seductive charm and beauty. As his obsession for her grows, Rachel now hatches a scheme to win back her late husband's estate from the unsuspecting Philip."
Philip, played by Sam Clflin, does a great job but the most intriguing character is that of Rachel, played by the beautiful and captivating Rachel Weisz. She is fantastic and you are sympathetic toward her in the beginning but then things being to change and you wonder what her real motives are. Then, just as you begin to think you have it figured our, a twist comes that completely catches you off guard!
The movie is very well made and while there are just a few slow spots, overall it keeps your attention and makes you keep watching so you see what happens at the end. Well done...
