Marvel Explains Loki's Villainy -- Sort Of

Marvel's official website has recently been updated to come to the defense of perennial MCU-villain Loki. The site's "Loki On Screen" page states, in part: "Gifted with a Scepter that acted as a mind control device, Loki would be able to influence others. Unbeknownst to him, the Scepter was also influencing him, fueling his hatred of his brother Thor and the inhabitants of Earth."  It would later be revealed in The Age of Ultron that one of the infamous Infinity Stones, the Mind Stone, was concealed within Loki's Scepter during his attempted invasion of Earth (during The Avengers). In fact, it was the stone that actually powered the Scepter. If you remember, Loki himself used the Scepter (given to him by none other than Thanos) to control the minds of Avengers member Hawkeye and a few others during the movie. Ultron would later use the Scepter to control world-renowned geneticist Dr. Helen Cho.

Of course, given that Loki was only in possession of the Scepter during the events of The Avengers, not all of his misdeeds (most notably in the Thor trilogy) can be attributed to the device or to the stone within. Prior to obtaining the Scepter, Loki betrayed and murdered his biological father, Laufey, and sent the Destroyer (Asgard's version of the Terminator) to kill Thor. After losing possession of the Scepter, Loki stranded his adopted father, Odin, on Earth and impersonated him so that he could rule Asgard. Call me crazy but it seems pretty clear that neither his hatred of Thor nor his desire to run a planet needed any prodding.

The theory that Loki was under the influence also fails to fails to account for the Vision apparently not being under any sort of control, despite the Mind Stone being implanted in his forehead. Though he's evidently powered by the stone and was created by Ultron's (who was also created with the Scepter's use) manipulation of the Scepter, Vision has yet to display any world-conquering tendencies.
