"The Chair" Early Review

Upcoming workplace comedy, The Chair, follows the misadventures of Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim after she's named the first minority woman department chair at Pembroke College. Korean-American Ji-Yoon has inherited a ghost town of an English department; her best friend and crush, Dr. Bill Dobson, is still grieving over his dead wife; and she feels rejected by her 7-year-old adopted daughter. There are pratfalls, "comic" misunderstandings, accidental fires, self-righteous students, statements about cancel culture and lame sitcom cliches galore; a famous TV star is even suggested as a new hire in order to boost dwindling enrollment. The biggest problem is that the "jokes" in the season's six episodes are rarely funny. If there's a follow-up season, I won't be watching.

Available on Netflix on August 20.
