"Spirit: Untamed" Review

by John Zenoni

This past week has definitely been a focus on the grandkids and films for them. In addition to watching ‘The Boss Baby: Family Business’, we also watched Dreamworks’ ‘Spirit Untamed’ last night. In fact, we had to watch it multiple times they loved it so much.
I didn't know that there was a film called, ‘Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron’ released back in 2002 or that there was a television series based on the character. Needless to say, we went into watching this new film completely new to the story and franchise, but it was ok. The girls immediately took to it from the get-go. This is about a young family consisting of a dad, daughter and mom; the mom rides horses in shows and then suddenly she passes away - from what we're never clear, at least I missed it if they said anything about it. Anyway, the husband, Jim (voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal), is so distraught he sends his daughter, Lucky, to live with her Aunt Cora (voiced by Julianne Moore.) After a mishap with her grandfather and an election, Lucky and Aunt Cora are sent to live with the dad, Jim, for awhile. It's there that Lucky encounters the wild, untamed horse, Spirit, and their adventure begins from there.
While this is definitely not the best animated film I've seen, in terms of story or the actual animation itself, it's still a good, wholesome, family movie with a good message. Needless to say, it was another fun night eating popcorn and watching a good flick with the grandkids.
