John's Take on "Fear Street Part 1: 1994"

by John Zenoni

I'll say this about the latest teen slasher/horror flick on Netflix, ‘Fear Street Part One:1994’, it definitely did provide me with some throwback moments of the older horror movies from that time. While not altogether great, it did have a few good scares in it so for that I can recommend watching it. The storyline itself is pretty good - the town of Shadyside has been plagued by mysterious deaths for many years and the residents don’t pursue what's happening until this latest group of high schoolers band together. The brother of one of the key characters puts together that the grave of a witch has been disturbed and as a result is causing killers to go on the loose in the town. This makes for a rousing - well, disturbing really - adventure for them to try and put the witch back in her grave and break the spell on the town.
The thing about this movie - one of three being shown on Netflix in a ‘Fear Street’ trilogy - is that it plays on - and even makes reference to - many of the old horror films from the past, such as ‘The Shining’, ‘Jaws’, ‘Halloween’ and ‘Friday the 13th’, all classics in their own right. This one is pretty good but not a classic by any means. While the story is pretty tight and the cast does a good job with what they have, it tries hard to repeat what worked in the past. But I am going to watch the next one in the series to see if it gets better.
