"McCartney 3,2,1" Early Review

Rick Rubin and music legend Paul McCartney take a deep musical dive into some of the Beatles co-founder's most celebrated songs in this upcoming no-frills docuseries. Without an audience or a couch, the Def Jam co-founder hits the billionaire rocker with all of the questions he's ever wanted to ask about his songwriting process. While playing the actual tunes in a studio, the two discuss everything from McCartney's introduction to fellow-Beatle George Harrison to the circumstances that led to the creation of  some of the songs he released with his later group, Wings.

Depending on your knowledge of pop music history, McCartney makes several surprising revelations, including the fact that though his father was a trumpet player and pianist, his famous son never learned how to read music. He also divulges that the title of legendary album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was derived from him mishearing a roadie asking for salt and pepper during a lunch break. The former mop-topper tells stories about the songs "Michelle", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "All My Loving", "We Can Work it Out", "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Thinking of Linking", "Let it Be", "Eleanor Rigby", "Penny Lane", "Band on the Run", "Waterfalls", "Blackbird" and more. And it's not just a couple of guys in black-and-white listening to music and talking; some of the tales are accompanied by photos and video footage of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti and the Beach Boys from the 60s and 70s. McCartney even breaks into spontaneous performances at the piano from time to time. You don't have to be a Beatles fan to enjoy this show. Any music-lover should get something out of it. Check it out.

Streaming on Hulu beginning July 16.
