"A Time for Mercy" Book Review

by John Zenoni

John Grisham is on target as usual with his latest, ‘A Time for Mercy’, the third installment of the Jake Brigance series, an attorney who debuted in one of his most popular novels, ‘A Time to Kill’ and then appeared again in its follow up, ‘Sycamore Row.’ In fact, not only is he on target but this is one of his best novels in years.

I love John Grisham and will not apologize for it. I know many people who think he is boring, long-winded and ‘too popular’ to enjoy but I'm captivated by his writing and he's at his best when his novels are set in a courtroom! This one definitely does not disappoint.

This third novel featuring attorney Jake Brigance is set in Mississippi and is about a teenage boy who's charged with killing his mom’s boyfriend, with whom they, including his sister, have been living. It also just so happens that the boyfriend is a deputy with a spotless record in the town. Jake is reluctant to take this case because he already knows what it's going to cost him personally and financially, not to mention what it will most likely do to his reputation.

Grisham’s way of telling stories about his characters and describing their traits is what really pulls me in and he does it really well in this one. From the boyfriend, who has his own demons to tell, to the guards even, Grisham describes everything so well.

This is a definite suspenseful novel that will keep you engaged and the spins and turns presented in the courtroom proceedings are the best. Definitely a must read!
