"The Dinner" Movie Review

Have to give heads up on a disappointing movie I watched last night and so needless to say do not recommend. It is a film based on the excellent book, 'The Dinner', by Herman Koch. The film really showed promise just based on the casting alone - Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan and Chloe Sevigny. These actors have all shown their weight in both commercial and independent films. But even this cast could not redeem this movie.

First of all, it was waaaaaay too long so it seemed to go on forever. Second, I cannot recall having watched a film where the background noise overshadowed the talking between the main characters. During critical scenes in the film, while discussions are taking place at the dinner table, you could not understand what was being said because of music or other people talking in the background. Very aggravating, of course. But the biggest letdown was the climax and ending. It was frustrating enough that I had read the book so was prepared for what to expect but it still confused me to no end! The people I watched it with were ready to literally pick up the tv and throw it out the window they were so mad. This is one example of a book that was definitely better than the movie!!! 2 out of 5 stars!
