"Enemies of the State" Review

by John Zenoni

There are many documentaries on conspiracy theories and a pretty interesting one I recently watched is called, ‘Enemies Of The State’, by Sonia Kennebeck. This is film is based on the true case of Matt De Hart, a young student/computer geek who tells his parents that he's being targeted by the US government for finding certain documents on the web and downloading them to his server. As a result of this, he and his parents, all of whom served in the military, end up packing up what they can and moving to Canada to seek political asylum.
What's interesting is that Matt is being charged with the possession of child pornography and soliciting sexual favors from a minor. While the family says there's no evidence of this, the leading detective on the case against Matt says they not only have evidence but statements from the victims about what happened. One side says that this is the actual reason the family is running but then there's interesting insight into what could be probable cause for him to be targeted by the CIA.
This is a fairly interesting and intriguing story except, in my opinion, for the ending. But it does leave you wondering how much we don't know about the type of monitoring our government does and what lengths will it go to?
