"Auntie Poldi and the Handsome Antonio" Book Review

by John Zenoni

This is my first entry into the investigative world of Auntie Poldi and it was pretty good, I have to admit. I would actually give this novel, ‘Auntie Poldi and the Handsome Antonio’ by Mario Giordano, a 3.5 stars rather than just a 3, just for the fact that she's definitely a fun and interesting character. The way she cut cracks toward her nephew, another central character in this story, and others was hilarious.

In this novel, Poldi is planning on enjoying her retirement in Sicily when suddenly she's surprised by the appearance of her ex-husband, John. He's also a detective who reaches out asking for her help to find a mysterious item that's worth ten million dollars. The only catch is that the Mafia is looking for it as well. Reluctantly she agrees and thus begins the dangerous search and adventures of Auntie Poldi, part of which involves finding the “Handsome Antonio.” The sooner she can find him and the item everyone is looking for, the sooner she can enjoy her retirement.

A couple of funny lines I loved in particular include:

“Poldi could see only one possible way out of this dilemma: she had to remove the central problem in the whole of this screwed-up affair. Namely, herself. Her original plan when she moved to Italy, which had been to drink herself to death with a nice view of the sea, had not really worked, so she had to devise an alternative.”

“The old woman (102 years old) shook her head. “Oh no. That was Graziano Scrudato, but he was snapped up by that whore Maria Bonaccorsi. If I ever see her again I will scratch her eyes out! Angelo was a good husband, but a terrible bore.””

Definitely a funny, light-hearted read and a pretty good, albeit not completely solid, mystery.
