"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" is Captivating

by John Zenoni

What can I say about ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ that has probably not already been said up to this point? What was already an excellent film was made even more so by the outstanding cast and their performances, particularly those of Viola Davis, who portrays Ma, and the late, great Chadwick Boseman, who plays Levee Green. Those two just are just unbelievable, is all I can say. I was mesmerized by Viola Davis in her fiery and fiesty role as she almost didn't look like herself and I couldn't help but look at Chadwick Boseman just stunned and saddened knowing he was no longer with us. An amazing talent gone way too soon.
The movie is based on a real Ma Rainey, although the story is mostly fictional. It was also interesting to find out that Denzel Washington was one of the producers and the excellent music was composed by Brandford Marsalis.
While it didn't end in the way I was hoping, the film was captivating and definitely worthy of the acclaim it received this past year. If you like dramas/musicals, this film is a must see!
