"The Privilege" Review

by John Zenoni

Man, I didn’t expect the German film, ‘The Privilege’, (currently streaming on Netflix), to pull me in so many ways but it did. On the one hand, it started off with what seemed to be a promising storyline, but then it just fell apart as it went further on. The story is about a teenager, named Finn, who goes through horrible trauma when younger when his sister appears to have a mental breakdown and kills herself - trying to take him with her - by jumping off a bridge. As a result, Finn has been in psychiatric care since that time, trying to get over his feelings of guilt and anger at what happened. As the story goes on, Finn and his best friend, Lena, become aware of strange things starting to happen to their friends at school. It's from here that things begin to unfurl and the film tries to take on too much. I will say that it did remind me of the horror classic ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ in some regard and could have been better if it had stayed on that path. But unfortunately, it takes a wrong turn and ends on a very predictable note. This one had promise, and does have a few scares, but overall it falls flat.
