"Fear Street Part 3: 1666" Early Movie Review

Sequels are always tricky and a lot of times the third movie in a series happens to come up short in terms of the entertainment value of its two predecessors. Unfortunately, Fear Street Part 3: 1666 can now be added to the list of films that fell victim to the junior jinx, alongside Star Trek Beyond, Jaws 3-D, A Nightmare Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Alien 3, Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines, Blade: Trinity, Rambo III, X-Men: The Last Stand, Spider-Man 3 and many others.

But it's not all bad. The biggest problems in the movie have to do with strange casting choices. The first movie took place in 1994, the second, set in 1978, naturally features a different cast -- there are even new actors portraying younger versions of characters we meet in the 90s. But for some reason, even though the third film goes more than 300 years into the past, many of the faces from the first two stories appear, which is very distracting.

Fortunately, the second half of 1666 actually takes us back to the future in 1994, where the faces are back where they belong and the quality of the film itself improves dramatically. I can't get into too much without spoiling the story. But I can tell you that all of the mysteries will be revealed, including the details of the origin of the "Shadyside Curse". Like with the Blade movie series, it may be best to cut your losses and take satisfaction in the story that you've seen up to this point from 1978 to 1994. But curiosity gets to the best of us and 1666 isn't worthless -- it's just deeply, deeply disappointing.

Available to stream on Netflix beginning July 16.
