"Fear Street Part 2: 1978" Early Movie Review

The Fear Street trilogy is chugging right along pretty smoothly. While the first entry in the series took us back to the mid-90s, the latest Fear period piece goes back even further -- to the summer of 1978. And the setting switches from a suburban Shadyside neighborhood to Camp Nightwing, located near the small Ohio town.

But first...the survivors of the latest Shadyside massacre, Deena and Josh Johnson, track down Constance Berman, the only other survivor of a Shadyside massacre that they know (aside from Deena's girlfriend, Sam, whose now possessed by the spirit of slain witch Sarah Fier). Desperate for any information that can be used to free Sam, the Johnsons probe Constance for any relevant details that she can remember from her face-off with a local mass murderer under Sarah's sway. And Constance's dive deep into her past constitutes the bulk of the story in Fear Street Part 2: 1978.

While the prospect of a sequel to a film that they enjoy chills the spine of many moviegoers, this one not only maintains the entertainment value of its predecessor -- the chills that it provides are intentional. If you liked Fear Street Part 1: 1994 (which you had to if you like horror), you'll no doubt wanna see how the story further unfolds. A trip to the late 70s with teenaged Constance Berman and Sherriff Goode will give you more answers about the Shadyside Curse -- and more gore. This series really doesn't hold back on the carnage (they don't call 'em massacres for nothing).

Teens, summer camp, the late 70s and murder are the stuff that horror movie dreams are made of. And Fear Street 2 wisely leaves the cornball comedy that destroyed so many slasher series out of the recipe (this means you Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, etc,). We'll see if the Fear Street folks can hit a three-pointer when Fear Street Part 3: 1666 drops.

Streaming on Netflix on July 9.
