It's difficult to believe the same person who made The Force Awakens made The Rise Of Skywalker. The pace was frenetic, was basically a series of scavenger hunts, and scrupulously avoided any sort of rumination. It was a hundred miles wide and an inch deep. The big mystery-reveals felt out of place and really jarring. Things that needed attention and could have made a more satisfying mystery were dispensed with quick one-liners. Abrams also felt the need to pepper the film with explanations of what happened in The Last Jedi, as to either apologize for its decisions or completely reverse them. It may be that Carrie Fisher's unexpected death made the originally planned film impossible, but they could have taken more time if needed. It felt rushed.
There were a lot of really good scenes and story ideas, but the unnecessary fake-outs and item quests didn't take the place of the drama, mythology, and character development we've come to expect. There was a lot of action, but Star Wars isn't primarily an action genre. The movie was fine and I had a good time, but it was a let down after The Last Jedi, which was one of the top two films of the franchise.
