The biggest issue was that there are too many movie styles at play here. They didn't so much gel as crash into each other. So far, the only movie to successfully blend the western, mystical and sci-fi genres is Star Wars -- remember how cruddy Cowboys & Aliens was? Smh. The Dark Tower is sort of what you'd get if you sucked all of the entertainment out of The NeverEnding Story. It is utterly unbelievable that it took 10 years to get this dingleberry made. And this was intended to kick off a seven-movie franchise. FOH.
Star (almost) Idris Elba was great -- but no one could've made this movie work. And in one of many idiotic decisions involved with this version of the King classic, the filmmakers chose to not center the story around Elba. People, if you're gonna produce an adult/kid buddy movie -- don't make the grown-up the sidekick. Hollywood has learned nothing from The Last Action Hero or Tomorrowland. Think: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The best thing about The Dark Tower is that it proves that Elba is more than ready to star in a genuine western. How about a remake of Stagecoach?
