You know what December means -- it's Star Wars time. Once again, thousands of people in costume will make their way to a theater near you. The Force Awakens made $2 billion so the sequel is guaranteed to be a hit. Fans of Awakens will finally get to see what happens to Finn, Rey and Luke Skywalker next. But last year's Rogue One raised the bar for Star Wars movies so hopefully, the people behind The Last Jedi took notes. Oh year, a bunch of movies that have nothing to do with space will debut this month too.

The Shape of Water
This summer's The Mummy was intended to usher in a classic monster movie cinematic universe to include the least compelling classic monster -- the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Unfortunately, The Mummy sucked zombie nuts. But The Shape of Water seems to be a pretty promising story about a Creature from the Black Lagoon-type...monster.

The Last Jedi
Hopefully, the folks at Lucasfilm have exorcised their campy streaks and are ready to get down to serious business. If the Force is with us, the second installment of this trilogy will be closer to The Empire Strikes Back than Attack of the Clones -- a lot closer.

You know, outside of Star Wars, and even that is a stretch for me as I have not been a huge fan of the latest entries, there is really nothing that excites me in this list of movies. “The Disaster Artist?” Weird and who cares? “The Shape of Water?” Why do I want to watch a weird film about a woman who falls in love with a creature? Guillermo Del Torri I do have to give credit for having an ‘out there’ imagination. Finally, “I, Tonya?” Who cares??? You know the outcome of that horrible drama...I was hoping to never hear if it again and now, all these years later, they are making a movie about it? Geez...what is going on with Hollywood?
ReplyDeleteThe thing we all know (and I assume all love) about movies is that you can find those that will educate you, shock you, scare you, make you sad and then there are those that just entertain you. If you want to see one that strictly is a fun, entertaining film then you must see “The Greatest Showman.” I know, I know it is a musical and not everyone enjoys these particular kind of films but this is one that I just cannot imagine anyone not enjoying. The plot is simple - it is a story about the beginning of PT Barnum’s circus and the people he helped find a home/family because of their differences and/or special talents - and is not complicated to follow. Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams both do a great job in their roles as childhood sweethearts - him coming from a very poor family, her from a wealthy family whose father rejects Hugh Jackman’s character due to his low status in society and tells him he will amount to nothing. So while the plot itself is ‘simple,’ the music itself is so integral to the plot that you cannot help but enjoy scene after scene. Being set in a circus world, the people or ‘oddities’ whole are introduced are captivating and the cinematography is really good. Speaking of the music, the dance sequences are so good and the music is perfect for each scene. There is one in particular that is so beautiful that you are just pulled into it as if you are really there. This is a happy, feel good movie that I could watch over and over again. Definitely a good one to see.
