A dream come true. I have been desperate to watch Piccadilly (1929) and today I found it on YouTube. A restored version with its own soundtrack and sepia-toned, blue-toned, and magenta images. I don't know how close this print is to E. A. Dupont's original version but I'm mesmerized.
To be a witness to both Gilda Gray and Anna May Wong at the peak of their brilliance, to see Charles Laughton at the beginning of his illustrious film career, all lovers of the magic of movies must watch Piccadilly.
Anna May Wong gets the role that was denied her in racist Hollywood. And she makes the most of it. Part sex kitten, part seductress, all Movie Star, Miss Wong is sensational. Gilda Gray is every inch her equal. The lady who was synonymous with the Shimmy Sparks and flies .
Cyrll Ritchard is on hand too, as Victor, the dancing Lothario who floats across the dance floor, partner to the ladies who enthrall us.
If you love and respect film, watch Piccadilly today. This is movie history, and it must be honored!
