When I saw a glimpse of a trailer with Hugh Jackman in water with EEG wires on his head, I thought we were getting another installment of Logan. Boy was I wrong. But being a huge sci-fi fan, I wasn't disappointed. This film takes place in a future Miami with conditions that quite honestly aren’t far-fetched. It’s a period where the present and future looks so bleak that people would rather relive their fondest memories through a process called Reminiscence.
The movie starts with Bannister (Hugh Jackman) narrating an introduction to the future and the need to relive memories. Early on we get an understanding of the science of Reminiscence and its importance to that time. Just when you start wondering about the types of memories people want to relive, in walks Mae (Rebecca Ferguson), a woman who just wants to find a misplaced item. Bannister is immediately intrigued by her beauty and gripped by her hauntingly seductive presence. His fascination with her takes us on a ride with intriguing memories as our road map -- the question “why?” being our guide.
There’s something in this movie for everyone, especially if you like movies that are set in the future with nostalgic vibes. This movie has the right amount of mystery, drama, action, suspense, and science fiction. I watched this on HBO Max but if you like science fiction movies, I would say it’s theater-worthy.
