It's amazing how many young people and adults I've heard of suffering from some form of anxiety today. I mean even children suffer from this disorder! Perhaps it's always been around but because of social medial and different news forums it's becoming more acceptable to talk about it. Regardless, I just finished watching this amazing documentary about it and I urge anyone who has young children at home or perhaps even college age kids to watch it and use the tools to talk about it. Even if no one in your immediate family suffers from it, this is a good program to watch so as to know what to look for. This film actually is excellent for adult sufferers of anxiety as well. It gives great insight into signs or symptoms, coping mechanisms and the available tools for getting through and dealing with anxiety.
While anxiety itself is normal and is actually a safety mechanism that we all have (aka ‘fight or flight’ response), there is a difference between that and an anxiety disorder. This is a great insight into the disorder and knowing that so many people suffer from it and no one is alone.
A couple of great quotes and facts I took away from it:
1) “It is about 50% genetically determined if you are highly sensitive and anxiety is easily triggered.”
2) “The ability for any parent to completely and totally screw up a child is unbelievable. The power we have to completely set a life off in exactly an unproductive direction is intimidating and you don’t realize it when you have a baby.”
3) “Some forms of anxiety are rooted in a CORE FEAR.”
4) “Get in the ‘present’ moment."
5) “Talk to people or someone. It is not healthy to keep it in.”
6) To quote Michael Phelps, who also talks about his anxiety, “It is ok to not be ok.”
