For an enjoyable, historical fiction film (the movie is loosely based on true events) with a nice romance built into it (for those who love that sort of film), I recommend the movie, ‘Eiffel.’ It's based on Gustave Eiffel and his desire, struggles and tumultuous relationship with his former boss' daughter. Eiffel is also, as one can guess by the name, the man behind the design and construction of France’s most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower. While the film may be loosely based on facts, it is actually an enjoyable and entertaining film, as it details what struggles Eiffel went through to get the tower built. Not many believed he would be able to complete such a large project and many, in fact, did not like it initially and tried to sabotage having it built.
The romance is also a pivotal part of the film and it is actually one that I did not mind watching because you kept hoping it would work out. It didn't take away from the focus of the building of the tower but was actually integral to the development of it.
The performances are solid - especially that of Romain Duris, who portrays Eiffel - and the pace and direction of the film is very good as well. This is not going to be a blockbuster by any means but for a good ‘grown up’ movie I definitely recommend it.
